Sachin announcing his retirement last week came as a big relief to many who were speculating it ever since he retired from ODI’s last year, may be a year or so late but alas, he’s been the darling of the BCCI and the people all over India. So, after his farewell test at the Wankhede, Mumbai, next month, the test batting line will be figuring without the name of Sachin Tendulkar at No.4. The only 6-7 odd tests he missed were against the Sri Lankans in 2001-02 and West Indies in 2011, respectively, due to injuries if I remember correctly.
So, the man who made nearly 16000 test runs batting at No.4 and may have almost made up his mind of batting at that position till cricket is played, happens to leave it vacant up for grabs. The contenders for it according to me should be the following…
- Virendra Sehwag- This could be a surprise and a short-term replacement but I feel Viru should be given another chance, although he has batted as an opener but not to forget that he started off as a no.5 batsman on his debut. In case he is recalled, he can be devastating because no other position seems to befit him with age catching on him.
- Suresh Raina- Waiting for more than 2 years in the wings to get a call back in the test side, which is only possible if Sehwag or Gambhir are over-looked.
- Virat Kohli- Only if Gambhir comes back and opens with Shikhar Dhawan, so that Pujara can come at 3 followed by Kohli at No.4.
